Frequently asked questions
The D.I.A.L organisation in Nuneaton, Bedworth and North Warwickshire is staffed by trained information and advice workers. It has been providing disabled people with help and support on every aspect of disability for almost twenty years.
Most D.I.A.L staff are themselves disabled. Not surprisingly, therefore, as an organisation we are very conscious of the importance of equal opportunities. Hence, our services are readily accessible to both disabled and non-disabled people, wheelchair users, those with learning difficulties, the hard of hearing, the deaf, the visually impaired, the blind, the house bound and members of ethnic minorities.
As well as offering support and advice to private individuals, D.I.A.L also provides information to workers and volunteers in the Statutory and Voluntary sectors.

Do you have any information on aids and adaptations that can be made in the home for disabled persons?
This will depend on your circumstances. In every case the needs of each individual disabled person will be taken into account. The provision of additional facilities will, in most cases, be provided within the existing home. Extensions to the property will be the exception rather than the rule. Adaptations fall into the following categories: Internal Adaptation Work: Raised toilet seats; bath rails; bath hoists; banister rails. These items generally cost less than £500 so will be supplied by Social Services if you meet the minimum essential needs requirements. Minor Adaptation Work The Council will pay for some minor aids and adaptations, for example, handrails, small ramps and grabrails. Contact Housing Services direct to see if you qualify. External Adaptations: Wheelchair ramps; grab rails/hand rails; step alterations If the cost of these adaptations is more than £500 Social Services will contact the Council. Major Additional Facilities The following may be recommended by Social Services, but arranged and paid for by the Council: Toilet/shower combined unit; ground floor bedroom; stairlifts; level access shower

Who is eligible for disability aids and adaptations?
You may qualify for these to be done at no cost to you, this will depend on what your income is. Requests for aids and adaptations will normally only be considered if the disabled person is either the tenant or his/her partner, or a member of the tenants immediate family and is permanently resident in the household. Work for others, such as lodgers, will only be carried out in exceptional circumstances and if they have been resident with the tenant for three or more years. Requests for work will not be approved where an application to purchase the property under the Right to Buy has been received. Where there are large arrears of rent, requests will only be considered after we have talked with the Area Housing Officer.

What is community care?
Many people wonder what is meant by "Community Care". Community Care is based on the idea that people should be supported to live "in the community" wherever possible, rather than in large institutions. In order to do this, many disabled people will need some extra support: to continue to live in their own homes they may need support from a variety of services. These might include home helps, occupational therapy, communicator-guides, respite care, and day services or they may live in small group homes in the community. These homes will cater for a small number of disabled people, providing an appropriate level of support to enable them to live as independently as possible. They will be homely and personal, rather than institutional in character, and may be specially adapted to make them more accessible for people with physical or sensory impairments. Community Care is sometimes called "Care in the Community".
